Design Technology
Intent
Design and Technology at Flora Gardens Primary School intends to inspire pupils to be imaginative, resourceful and innovative, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to design and make high-quality products that solve real and relevant problems. We want our children to see themselves as creative problem-solvers and critical thinkers who can turn ideas into tangible outcomes.
It is important to us that pupils understand the iterative nature of design—planning, creating, testing and improving—and that they build resilience and perseverance through this process. Through exploring the work of a diverse range of designers, engineers and innovators from the past and present, we aim to broaden children’s cultural capital and show how DT shapes the world around us.
Our aim is to deliver a purposeful and practical curriculum that combines technical knowledge with hands-on making, encouraging children to apply their learning across other subjects, particularly mathematics, science and computing. Beyond discrete lessons, we provide opportunities for pupils to use their DT skills to solve real-life problems in meaningful contexts.
How Parents Can Help
Design and Technology is everywhere. We are surrounded by it but often don't think about how and why things are the way they are. Take a moment with your children to consider some of the everyday household items that you own which have been affected by advances in Design and Technology. How have they changed in recent years and why? If your child has a keen interest in D&T then click on the link below. This will take you to a number of webpages which will help them to develop their D&T knowledge and understanding.
